Brevard Times: Top 10 Classic Muscle Cars

Total Car Score has named its Top 10 Classic Muscle Cars. The site has also identified 10 modern-era muscle cars that offer excellent performance capabilities at a much lower cost, as well as the potential to be future classics.?

"We're seeing a general rise in auction and listing prices of classic muscle cars as market interest in these models picks up," said Karl Brauer, Editor in Chief of Total Car Score. "Rare older models, in original or properly restored condition, are increasing in value even as the general economy continues to struggle. At the same time, the capability of modern muscle cars has skyrocketed over the past 12 years. For value seekers, several models produced between 2000 and 2010 offer excellent performance at a relatively low purchase price."

As the 2012 automotive auction season winds down Total Car Score has identified the following classic American muscle cars that not only represented the pinnacle of automotive performance when new but also offer strong market value today. Hotels expand in Kenya as business travel surges

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Some of the world's biggest hotel brands including Marriott, Hilton and Rezidor are planning to open hotels in Kenya to cash in on a surge in business travellers from China and the Middle East to east Africa's biggest economy.

Interest in Kenya from China and other new markets including India and the United Arab Emirates led to a 15 percent surge in visitors to the country to 1.26 million last year, accounting for about 80 percent of total bookings in Nairobi.

Kenya is racing to improve facilities to meet this growing demand, which has important economic implications - the sector generated foreign exchange earnings of 98 billion shillings last year, second only to tea.

Its main airport, the biggest in east Africa, is being expanded to double its capacity to over 4 million passengers.

Alex Kyriakidis, Marriott's president and managing director, Middle East and Africa, said he expected to sign a deal by the end of the year to open a hotel in Kenya by 2015.

"We believe investment in infrastructure in the airport and Nairobi looking to be a hub is very positive," Kyriakidis told Reuters at the Africa Hotel Investment Forum held in Kenya's capital, Nairobi.

Hotel operators at the Forum shrugged off concerns over violence that have in the past dented Kenya's tourism sector, including during the election in 2007.

"We have just gone through the Arab Spring in North Africa (and) all our hotels are absolutely fine," Kyriakidis said.

Besides Kenya, Marriott plans a total of about 5,000 rooms in Benin, Ethiopia, Ghana, Gabon, Nigeria and Rwanda by 2015, a $1.5 billion investment.

Hilton plans to open two new hotels in Nairobi and is looking to renovate and rebrand existing hotels on Kenya's coast, as well as venturing into Congo and Rwanda.

Rezidor will open two in Nairobi by 2014.

Africa has posted strong growth rates of about 5 percent in recent years, second only to Asia, drawing increased investment, according to World Bank estimates.

"Seven out of the 10 fastest (growing) economies are in sub-Sahara Africa. We would be crazy not to be focused in the sub-Saharan market," said Andrew McLachlan, vice president of business development Africa and India Ocean Islands at Carlson Rezidor.

In Europe crisis, connection culture stifles youth

ROME (AP) ? Maria Adele Carrai has two master degrees from Italian universities in economics and Asian languages and is now earning her PhD in international law in Hong Kong. Her linguistic credentials are formidable: Besides native Italian, she has nearly flawless English, a rarity in Italy, as well as French, Arabic, Japanese and Mandarin.

But the 26-year-old from a family of physicians in a small town near the Adriatic Sea, lacks an increasingly crucial key to unlocking the door to work in Italy: a "raccomandazione." It's Italian for the right word from the right person to get you hired, even if you might not be the best one for the job.

As Europe's economic crisis darkens the future of millions of youth, the culture of connections that has lain at the heart of hiring practices in much of the continent is becoming ever more entrenched, even as it harms prospects of recovery. It is blocking young talent or driving it overseas, and contributing to a vicious circle of stagnation that threatens to leave Europe behind in the game of globalization.

___

Editors: This is the latest installment in Class of 2012, an exploration of Europe's financial crisis through the eyes of young people emerging from the cocoon of student life into the worst downturn the continent has seen since the end of World War II.

___

"What matters is not how good you are, but who you know," laments Carrai, who first spoke to the AP for a Class of 2012 story on the continent's devastating brain drain. To be sure, having a good connection never hurts, anytime, anywhere. But in much of Europe, especially the crisis-hammered south, it's often the main ticket to economic opportunity: Without one, young people and experts say, there's little chance of being launched on a promising career.

Marco Pacetti, rector of Ancona's Polytechnical University, puts it this way: "In the U.S. ... connections matter, but you'd better be good. In Italy, nobody counts on the one with the connection to have competence, merit."

"That's the difference between a letter of recommendation and a 'raccomandazione,'" Pacetti says with a wry chuckle. In America, "the letter writer takes on the responsibility of sending over someone who is well prepared ? who's not an idiot."

A scandal at Rome's Sapienza, one of Italy's oldest and best-known universities, drives home the point. In a case dubbed "relative-gate," the wife, daughter and son of Sapienza's longtime rector landed prestigious teaching posts despite having limited qualifications. The real shocker came when it emerged that the rector's son passed his cardiology exam thanks to an examining panel made up of three dentists and two dental hygienists.

Spain has its own deep-rooted system of connections ? called "enchufismo." As in Italy, it's an outgrowth of a Mediterranean culture of family networks where members of the clan look out for each other. Many southern Europeans have a practically inbred distrust of the state, often associated with corruption ? and family is the one institution they can count on.

Connections became less critical during Spain's economic boom from the late 1990s until 2008, but are now proving crucial again in a country with unemployment at nearly 25 percent.

"In Spain, you always had 'enchufismo, but at least in boom times you had access to interviews and work (without connections)," said Maria Astilleros, an unemployed teacher in Madrid. "Since the crisis hit, the interviews have ended and we've gone back to 'enchufismo.'"

Astilleros recently secured her first job interview in two years, with a public relations company, because the owner is a client of her uncle.

Gayle Allard, an American professor of managerial economics at the IE Business School in Madrid, estimated that about 95 percent of jobs in Spain depend on connections.

"It was one of the things that shocked me in Spain," said Allard, "that you could only move around in the labor market with contacts."

The professor said that such an ingrained culture of nepotism has a corrosive effect on economic growth, which is more crucial than ever as Spain reels under staggeringly high youth unemployment of nearly 53 percent. Spain is "definitely not a meritocracy," Allard said. "You're probably not getting the best qualified candidate for a job. You're just getting the candidate with the best contacts."

Class of 2012 member Moira Koffi, who recently completed her studies at the prestigious Sorbonne university in Paris, talks about the importance of connections in France: "If you are recommended by someone, it's the first thing you say: It's how you get a job."

While Koffi, a 22-year-old communications grad, has herself benefited from the system, she still wishes connections weren't so decisive in finding employment. "In the U.S.," Koffi said, "people give you a chance because of what you are."

Sorbonne sociology professor Jean-Francois Amadieu said that 70 percent of French people find a job through personal connections or through an internship ? which itself is usually only possible with the right connection. "Youths from modest backgrounds have great difficulties finding internships compare to those from the middle or wealthy classes because of more restricted family networks," he said.

In Italy, the connections culture "has grown even more with the worsening of the economic crisis," said economist Emiliano Mandrone. He's well-positioned to know: Every year, Mandrone helps prepare a state-funded telephone survey of some 40,000 citizens to learn how Italians find their jobs.

"The issue of 'raccomandazioni' isn't, do you find work or don't you," said Mandrone. "Rather, the problem is, you take work away from someone who is better."

Mandrone said the price of the "raccomandazione" system to Italian society and economy has not been quantified in financial terms, but it's clearly "huge."

Italy's connections culture has long been blamed in large part for spurring the "brain drain" of many of Italy's best and brightest. The Institute for Competitiveness, a non-profit Italian think tank, recently estimated that brain drain costs Italy some euros 1.2 billion (more than $1.5 billion) annually in terms of lost patent and other royalties from inventions that highly qualified emigrants from Italy developed while working abroad.

In Greece, ground zero for Europe's financial crisis, a vast connections-based political machine is seen as a major factor in the economic implosion. In return for votes, the major parties slotted job seekers with political connections into cushy bureaucratic jobs ? with little experience or qualifications.

The result: When the financial crisis erupted in late 2009, the government didn't even know how many people it had on its payroll or how much it was paying them.

Germany may be an exception to the trend of European talent taking flight or being stymied in realizing professional dreams. In former communist East Germany, who you knew in the party apparatus was very important to climbing the economic ladder. But in today's united Germany, connections are not seen as a major part of corporate culture.

Class of 2012 member Lutz Hentschel, 27, who completed his masters in electrical engineering earlier this year, sent out about 40 applications before landing a job in Berlin developing electrical circuits for elevators.

During his job hunt, he said, he was once interviewed for a job that ultimately went to a less qualified applicant who knew the interviewer.

But, in Germany, said Hentschel, "if you are qualified, you will get a job in the end,"

Britain grapples with another longstanding system of patronage ? its "old school tie network" that conjures up images of men sporting school blazers or hobnobbing in exclusive gentleman's clubs. While Britain has made great strides in becoming more meritocratic, complaints remain rife that access to prestigious jobs often relies on upper-crust social background and education.

In southern Europe, however, the culture of "raccommandazioni" permeates all social classes and sectors ? from landing a job in a bank to winning a building contract.

Carrai, the linguist and aspiring international law expert, ruefully learned how much connections count even in the rarefied world of academia. She moved to Hong Kong to escape the stifling atmosphere of university nepotism: "I saw how it worked. I didn't want to stay in Italy and stick with this system."

"'Raccomandazioni' are to a certain degree a normal, human," she said. But cross a certain line "and it becomes corruption."

What You Should Know About Basic Uses Of The Coaxial Cable ...

by Jon

For transmitting digital signals to digital output devices like a new LCD Television can also be done utilizing these cables. They are also easy to use and can be employed by even those people who?re not technologically savvy. Not just will you want to obtain a high definition multimedia interface audio & video cable for your surround sound and home theater system, but they serve a lot of other functions as well, for your computers and other home electronics. These cables may be classified into CY, YY and SY cables. Click here for more on audio cables today or subwoofer cable.

Dolby and DTS are ideal sound formats to be employed for use in digital optical cables. Within the beginning, analogue signals were mainly used for transferring data to different devices. When using digital cables, you do not require to buy a whole bunch of different cables, because the high definition multimedia interface cables are interchangeable so that you can save time and hassle trying to find two different cables. This is because modulated light is used to transfer information rather than electronic signals.

Electrical wires are utilized generally in industrial sites as well as installation in buildings. These are treated as a good adhesion towards the glasses which is another good quality of the wires. If you are hooking up a house theater system, you?ll most likely require an audio & video cable. The plating from the connectors could make a difference as to how prone they?re to oxidizing, but since you?re unlikely to make use of these cables outdoors and also you?re likely not to be utilizing them for years to come, you can purchase either from the two and get the same results.

A bare wire is non-insulated or bare as the name indicates. FeNi 42 Core and Copper Clad 24 & 26 are the two grades of the wire. The easy installation of this device allows for it to be incredibly user friendly and compatible with home systems. Nonmetallic sheathed cable has a uncovered ground wire with a handful of insulated conductors, wrapped in outer protective plastic sheath.

At the time of this writing, there are various HDMI lead types and choosing the correct 1 for your application could get a bit complicated and confusing. Electrical cables have electrical power and also telecommunications signals. Flexible Control Cables are mostly used for measuring, control or regulation in the field of process automation.

Immigrants Are Not Miracle Workers Who Can Fix Any Broken ...

Many U.S. cities caught in a spiral of economic decline think they have a rescue plan: an influx of immigrants. Officials are carrying out policies aimed at attracting foreigners in hopes that their energy and drive will reverse decades of population losses and set the stage for a revival.Asia.immigrants

Such thinking is a breath of fresh air?and the polar opposite?of the restrictionist rage that has led Arizona and other states to adopt draconian tactics to chase away such people. But immigrants aren?t miracle workers who can fix any broken economy. Their absence often signals that cities have taken a wrong turn. But that doesn't mean that rolling out the welcome mat will get a place back on track without fundamental reform.

The notion that immigrants can revive dying cities isn?t new. Cleveland started trying to get its ?fair share? of the foreign-born from traditional immigrant magnets such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Houston about a decade ago.

Its efforts petered out, but other struggling cities have recently jumped on the immigrant bandwagon.

In Baltimore, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake wants to attract 10,000 new families, including foreigners, within 10 years. To this end, she has barred authorities from asking city residents about their immigration status. The mayor, a Democrat, is also offering nutrition and exercise programs in Spanish, an overture that was anathema to her predecessor.

Dayton, Ohio, is also courting immigrants, offering legal services to people with visa-related questions and connecting them with local businesses and community groups interested in hiring or helping them.

In Michigan, a former Democratic state representative, Steve Tobocman, runs a nonprofit group, Global Detroit, that has raised $4 million to investigate ways to attract and retain immigrants. The group is experimenting with programs to connect low-income immigrant and minority entrepreneurs with lenders who offer loans without collateral. Tobocman is also seeking ways to keep foreign students in local universities from moving away.

?No one strategy will, by itself, revitalize the Detroit regional economy,? he says. ?However, nothing is more powerful to remaking Detroit as a center of innovation, entrepreneurship and population growth, than embracing and increasing immigrant populations.?

The problem with this thinking is that it misunderstands the role that immigrants play in an economic revival. They aren?t the engine for growth. They are only the fuel, albeit a high-octane one. The difference is crucial.

What is true, contrary to the bellyaching by anti- immigration restrictionists, is that they are a net boon -- not a burden?for local economies. A recent Standard & Poor?s study found that U.S. cities with a ?significant? immigrant population improved their credit rating because even low-wage foreigners pay taxes that help defray the cost of services.

There is also evidence that immigration and growth are strongly correlated. A study by David Dyssegaard Kallick of the New York-based Fiscal Policy Institute examined the experience of the 25 largest metropolitan areas, starting in 1990. He found that wherever there was economic growth, there was immigration, and wherever there was immigration, there was economic growth.

From 1990 to 2000, New York?s economic-growth rate was directly related to an increase in immigrants? share of the local labor force, Kallick found. They were crucial to the city?s recovery in the 1970s when the declining population was causing its tax base to erode and the crime rate to soar?similar to what Rust Belt cities such as Detroit and Cleveland have been experiencing.

But the stories of an immigrant-led renewal?the Korean store owners in blighted New York neighborhoods and wig manufacturers who created the vibrant Koreatown in Los Angeles starting in the 1970s?overestimate the economic collapse of the cities that the newcomers are credited with restoring, says Sanda Kaufman, a professor of planning, policy and public administration at Cleveland State University. She conducted a study in 2003, at the behest of Cleveland?s mayor, that examined using immigration for urban renewal. Kaufman found that much of the research in the U.S. linking immigration with growth came either from large cities with thriving economies, or ones that were never completely down and out.

Even New York in the 1970s wasn?t quite as desolate a place as Detroit is today. Its population losses were not as severe. The financial industry had not retrenched as badly as Detroit?s auto industry has. And its government wasn?t as badly broken. New York got a federal loan to avoid bankruptcy, to be sure -- but not until President Gerald Ford was convinced it was serious about dealing with its structural fiscal imbalances, not to mention crime and crumbling schools. That is when the city became a magnet for immigrants who speeded up its turnaround.

The newcomers are very good at finding and seizing openings in an economy that the native-born residents don?t see or don?t want. This is one reason cities should remove the barriers keeping immigrants away. But first these opportunities have to exist.

Solar Powered Patio String Lights Affordable Addition To Your ...

Solar energy powered string lights are one of most common porch lights, you know them these are generally akin to the Christmas tree lights except without a plug. Many other times you see them or their not solar relatives wrapped around a trunk of a tree, draped throughout a patio and even utilized in some form of outdoor garden decorations. These come in various sorts of colors and styles.

Solar powered string lights are basically a line of light bulbs connected together on electrical strings (conduits). They are powered by the sunlight, the suns energy is gathered by a connected solar panel and changed over into electrical power. This electricity is then put aside for later use by rechargeable solar batteries. When night falls the lights comes on powered by the sun?s energy which was converted into electrical energy and stored in the rechargeable battery packs. What assist to trigger the solar string light to be able to provide all night time lighting is by means of the usage of LED?s (Light Emitting Diodes). LED is an advanced bulb which supplies lighting, at more light per watt compared with an ordinary light bulb. It is more energy saving, can be made very very small, less than 2 mm, has a very long life span when equated to an ordinary light bulb, it illuminates and brightens immediately, is shock proof so if you accidentally drop it won?t break and should still work, they are cool simply because they generate little amounts of heat and they don?t poison the environment like fluorescent lights do.

Solar powered patio string lights are an effortless and inexpensive decorative accessory to your outdoor porch lighting. HARRISON, New Jersey (AP) -New York Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry has been suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount of money for violent conduct by the former Arsenal striker in an MLS game.

The league's disciplinary committee said Friday that Henry had endangered the safety of Sporting Kansas City forward Kei Kamara in the 93rd minute.

Henry appeared to come up from behind Kamara during a stoppage in play and hit heads with the Sporting Kansas City forward, who scored his team's second goal in a 2-0 win on Wednesday night.

Henry will serve the suspension Saturday when New York faces the New England Revolution.

Fines collected will be donated to the charitable partners of MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the MLS Players Union.

(AP) ? Rookie shortstop Zack Cozart considered what it would be like to celebrate a division title without the manager who made it possible. It wouldn't be so satisfying without Dusty Baker doing some dousing.

The Reds missed a third straight game on Friday because of problems caused by an irregular heartbeat. He was expected to be released from a hospital in Chicago, but wouldn't be at Great American Ball Park for the start of a series against Los Angeles.

The Reds' clinching number was down to two heading into Friday's games, raising the possibility that Cincinnati could end up celebrating without its manager.

"It would be bittersweet," Cozart said. "We're all still thinking about him and wish he were here. He'll be with us in spirit. I guess we've got to go out there and win one for the skipper."

The 63-year-old Baker was hospitalized in Chicago on Wednesday because of symptoms from an irregular heartbeat that he's had for some time. The Reds swept the series against the Cubs, putting themselves in position to clinch their second division title in three years at home over the weekend.

The Reds weren't sure when Baker would be allowed to rejoin the team.

"He's fine," said bench coach Chris Speier, who took over Baker's duties. "They want to make sure before they put him on a plane ? he has some fluids (built up) ? make sure that's all taken care of. But yeah, you worry about him. He's our leader and for me, just a dear, dear friend. My mind is more with him than it is about this game."

The Reds clinched at least a wild-card berth in Chicago, but weren't going to celebrate until they got the division title, even if they had to do it without Baker.

"It would be a little disappointing," infielder Todd Frazier said. "Knowing Dusty, he would want us to get it done as quickly as possible. If he's not here, I know he'll be celebrating with us in spirit."

Baker made out the lineups for the two games he missed in Chicago. Speier took care of it on Friday, deciding to rest left fielder Ryan Ludwick one more day to let a sore groin heal. He also put Cozart back in the starting lineup for the first time in two weeks. Cozart missed 14 games with strained muscles in his left side.

Speier wasn't sure whether left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman would be cleared by the medical staff to play in the series. He hadn't appeared in a game since Sept. 10 because of a tired pitching shoulder.

"If he's available and there's an opportunity to use him, I'm not going to hesitate," Speier said. "I don't know what role I would put him in the first time back, but it would be good to get him back on the mound."

The Dodgers were fading from the wild-card race after losing 10 of 14. Atlanta and St. Louis were in position to get the two NL wild cards, with Milwaukee 2? games back and the Dodgers three games out.

"We're in a very advantageous position to allow our guys to maybe take an extra day of rest, make sure they don't reinjure something," Speier said. "It's not like the club we're playing. They're fighting every day to get to those playoff scenarios. We're in a pretty good position."

The Reds could clinch on Friday if the Cardinals lost an afternoon game in Chicago and Cincinnati beat Los Angeles in a night game. The Cardinals' game was shown on the videoboard at Great American while the Reds took batting practice Friday, a change from the usual pregame music.

They knew Baker wouldn't be in uniform if they got the title later in the day.

"He's been so instrumental in everything we do," outfielder Drew Stubbs said. "He's our leader, from putting the lineups out there to managing pitch-by-pitch. We want to get it done as quickly as possible. If he's not here managing, maybe he can get here for the festivities."

"Dredd 3D" Review: An Action Movie Not Smart Enough to Know How Dumb It Is

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Remember that old TV cartoon show "Clutch Cargo"? It was so low-budget that, rather than animate the characters talking, they would cut a hole in the face and show a real, human mouth speaking the dialogue. It was creepy, but that effect at least made the kiddie program something of a standout in bizarre pop culture.

Don't expect "Dredd 3D" to be nearly as memorable, despite the fact that actor Karl Urban spends the whole film wearing a helmet that covers practically his entire face, leaving only the movements of his mouth to do all the acting. If the 1995 Sylvester Stallone vehicle "Judge Dredd" annoyed fans of the original British comics by having the hero wear his trademark helmet too infrequently, "Dredd 3D" will no doubt put off mainstream audiences by trapping the hero in both headgear and an underwritten screenplay that erase his humanity.

In this second big-screen adaptation of the graphic serial created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, Mega City is a post-apocalyptic dystopia covering the area between Washington D.C. and Boston, where newer 200-story atrium blocks sit nestled among crumbling skyscrapers. The city's cops are "Judges," entitled not only to enforce the law but also to carry out sentences instantly, even when that sentence is death.

Judge Dredd is given the task of breaking in rookie Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby); she didn't quite pass training, but as her name suggests, she's a powerful psychic.

What begins as a routine tour of duty through the mean streets of Mega City takes a twist when the two judges apprehend a drug dealer working for notorious crime boss Ma-Ma (Lena Headey). Not sure enough of his guilt to execute him on the spot, the cops plan to haul in their suspect for interrogation.

To keep that from happening, Ma-Ma puts the whole block on lockdown and instructs the tenants to either kill the judges or to stay out of the way of the coming carnage. And if that sounds identical to the plot of "The Raid: Redemption," the acclaimed Indonesian import from earlier this year, that's because it is. And even if the similarity between the two is pure coincidence, "Dredd 3D" suffers greatly by comparison, as it fails to muster even half of the thrills of its predecessor.

Not that "Dredd 3D" fails outright: The screenplay by Alex Garland (a frequent collaborator of Danny Boyle's) and Pete Travis' direction offer up occasional moments of ultra-violent jolts and mordant wit, like the robot janitor cleaning up the scene of a bloody shopping-center massacre as a mechanical voice chirps, "The Level One food court will reopen in 30 minutes."

But we never get to know Dredd or Cassandra as anything but functionaries of a not-particularly-fresh plot, even though the latter's psychic abilities are the excuse to let the character go out helmet-less. Ma-Ma's main stock in trade is a drug that makes addicts perceive the world in slow motion, and it's mainly used for some flashy but ultimately pointless shots of water drops and plummeting bodies and random bullets moving frame-by-frame-by-frame.

"Dredd 3D" is the kind of movie that flirts with a Fascist point of view about law and order but barely acknowledges it while also firing round after round of ammo at its heroes without bothering to explain how they almost never get hit. If this film were a little smarter or a little dumber, it might have been a great deal more fun.

Abused Georgia teen banished to California by stepfather: police

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A small, gaunt Georgia teen who turned up at a Los Angeles bus terminal told police his abusive stepfather had given him $200 and a list of homeless shelters before putting him on a bus, authorities said on Thursday.

Police were called to the city's Greyhound Bus Station on September 11 by a retired sergeant, Joe Gonzales, who was working security there, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said in a news release.

The officers found 18-year-old Mitch Comer, a "pale, gaunt" youngster weighing 87 pounds and standing just over five feet tall, whom police at first thought was aged 12 or 13.

"Comer explained that his stepfather had told him he was now a man, given him $200 and put him on a bus in Jackson, Mississippi, with a list of homeless shelters he had located on the Internet," Los Angeles police said in a news release.

Investigating the story further, Comer provided details to police of abuse over a period of at least four years. After removing him from school in the eighth grade, his stepfather, identified as Paul Matthew Comer, 48, shut him in a room.

The youngster was fed only small amounts of food and forced to hold a grueling disciplinary position for eight hours a day with the top of his head against a wall, his fingers interlaced behind his head, and his feet raised off the ground.

The younger Comer told police he had two younger sisters still living at home. LAPD contacted local Paulding County, Georgia, sheriff's deputies, who immediately went to the family home and took Comer's stepfather and mother, Sheila Marie Comer, in for questioning.

The parents were subsequently arrested on child abuse and false imprisonment charges. Detectives also put Mitch Comer's younger sisters, Catrina and Lya, into protective custody with Paulding County Children's Services.

After staying in a Los Angeles board and care home, Mitch Comer flew to Georgia on Wednesday to help in the investigation and legal proceedings against his parents.

"I am greatly relieved and thankful that one of our retired officers brought this victim to our attention and started the process to uncover these heartbreaking circumstances," Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a statement.

"Without the intervention of retired Sergeant Gonzales, Mitch Comer and his young sisters would still be suffering," he added.

Samsung's latest commercial: The next big thing is already here

SGS3

How convenient. On the same day that Apple released the sixth iteration of its iOS, Samsung has released their latest Galaxy S III commercial. Must be some kind of coincidence.

In this latest commercial, you can see many consumers waiting in line in front of an unnamed store, apparently waiting for an unnamed phone. They all seem to be wearing white headphones though, I wonder if that's some sort of clue?

Perhaps my favorite line from the commercial was this one:

Girl: I heard the connector is all digital... What does that even mean?

Man: What? Who knows??..... long pause.... I'm psyched!

Anyway, the commercial does tout some of the SGS3's features such as a large screen, NFC and the fact that it's had 4G for a while now. It's pretty funny and unlike their print ad that ran a few days ago, this video was fairly clever. Head past the break to watch.

Flying, burning bark triggers Wash. evacuations

Kittitas Co. Emergency Response

Smoke and ash from the Table Mountain Complex wildfire is seen near a firefighters' base camp in eastern Washington.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Crews on Thursday were battling a fire that forced dozens of eastern Washington residents to flee overnight with their valuables. The fire sent pieces of burning bark flying miles away and created columns of smoke nearly eight miles tall, some even reportedly creating their own lightning.

The evacuations in the Mission Ridge area near Wenatchee?add to the hundreds of people who earlier evacuated across the region due to fires raging over the last few weeks.

The new evacuations came as eight-inch chunks of burning bark were reported to have fallen in Mission Ridge. Those chunks were coming from an explosive fire inside the Table Mountain Complex some six miles away, a fire incident spokesman said.

That fire, along with others nearby, "have grown rapidly over the last few days, sending large smoke columns with burning embers north and east towards the Mission Ridge area," the incident team said in an update Thursday morning.

Some of those smoke columns topped 40,000 feet on Wednesday, incident spokesman Kent Ramsey told NBC station KING5.com.?

The columns were so hot they generated their own winds, added National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Byrd. "It does create its own little atmosphere," he said, noting that the columns reportedly even created lightning on Wednesday. "We may see that again today," he said.

The region has seen no rain in more than a month, while temperatures have been high and humidity low. Winds have pushed fires into forests with many bug-killed trees that have become easily combustible.

One fire incident commander on Thursday called that combination of conditions so late in September "unprecedented" in his 28 years of firefighting.

Washington state firefighters say three fires currently burning could merge into one massive blaze. KING's Jim Forman reports.

In the Mission Ridge area, the residents of some 150 homes were told to evacuate, but some were determined to stay -- at least for now.

The Table Mountain Fire Complex is actually four fires that have so far burned 9,500 acres within the Wenatchee National Forest. The fires, and dozens of others in eastern Washington, were started by lightning strikes earlier this month.

A second Table Mountain fire on Wednesday caused the closure of Highway 97 for several hours.?

The complex of fires was just 4 percent contained on Thursday morning.

Dozens of residents around Liberty, Wash., were earlier told to evacuate.

NASA

This satellite-based image shows major fires burning in Washington state on Wednesday.

In Liberty itself, a town of several dozen, some residents were preparing to leave if an evacuation order is issued there.?

"This time we're watching it pretty close, real close," Larry Smith told KING5.com as he and his wife packed up.

But Paul Heit told KING5.com that he wasn't packing just yet.

"If I see flames coming over the hill and it's coming 80 miles per hour," he said, "yeah, I'll probably leave."

Some 5,000 firefighters are battling the eastern Washington fires, the largest of which is the Wenatchee Complex at nearly 40,000 acres. Nearly 2,000 firefighters have been deployed there but that complex of fires is just 12 percent contained.

The fires have created bad air quality for residents, especially in Wenatchee, Leavenworth and Cashmere, where the school district suspended classes for the week as a result.

Heavy dust has also covered parts of the region. Some locals have even said the conditions are worse than when the Mount St. Helens volcano blew in 1980, sending ash across the state.
