Obama touts Hagel, says no decision on defense secretary job

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama offered strong support for former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as the potential next U.S. defense secretary but said in remarks aired on Sunday that he had not yet decided on a nominee for the Pentagon post.

Hagel is considered a leading candidate to replace outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, but the former Nebraska lawmaker has come under criticism for his record on Israel and for a comment that being gay was an inhibiting factor for being an ambassador.

"I've served with Chuck Hagel. I know him. He is a patriot. He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate, somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam," Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" in an interview taped on Saturday and broadcast on Sunday.

Any nomination for defense secretary must be approved by the Senate where some lawmakers have voiced criticism about their former colleague.

"I think a lot of Republicans and Democrats are very concerned about Chuck Hagel's positions on Iran sanctions, his views toward Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah, and that there is wide and deep concern about his policies. All of us like him as a person," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said.

"There would be very little Republican support for his nomination, at the end of the day, there will be very few votes," Graham said on Fox News Sunday.

Obama said he had seen nothing that would disqualify Hagel.

The president said Hagel had apologized for his comments related to homosexuality, referred to by NBC's David Gregory in the interview.

"With respect to the particular comment that you quoted, he apologized for it," Obama said.

"And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country. And that's something that I'm very proud to have led," he said.

Obama came out in favor or gay marriage in the middle of his re-election bid this year. Earlier in his term he presided over the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prohibited gay men and women from serving openly in the U.S. military.

Hagel, who left the Senate in 2008, has faced questions about his record on Israel.

Some of Israel's leading U.S. supporters contend that Hagel at times opposed Israel's interests, voting several times against U.S. sanctions on Iran, and made disparaging remarks about the influence of what he called a "Jewish lobby" in Washington.

Obama, who has strained relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has faced questions of his own from the American Jewish community about his approach to the U.S. ally.

Obama said Hagel was doing an "outstanding job" serving on an intelligence advisory board and gave no indication on when he would make his final decision about the defense chief job.

The president has already backed down once from a contentious nomination, choosing Democratic Senator John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state rather than going with his presumed first choice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, whom many Republicans opposed after she made controversial remarks about the September 11 attacks on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans.

10 Ways to Generate Buzz and Market Your Business | Writer's Living

marketing-ave-751

I wrote a post the other day about the best way to market your book, writing career, or business. I said the best way to market your work is the way you will actually use. The thing you will actually do. It doesn?t matter if others give you a ton of other ideas for things you won?t do. All that matters is what you will do.

But I now want to give you specific ideas for marketing your book, writing, or business. I am sharing these ideas just in case you are scratching your head looking for a list of ideas for getting the word out about what you do. Having been a published book author and business owner for more than ten years, I?ve seen lots of marketing ideas. I?ve seen ideas that have worked for author friends or others I know in business. And those ideas that fell flat. I?ve tried ideas that didn?t work, and implemented ideas that worked beautifully.

What I?ve come to know is that two people (or businesses) can implement the same strategy or idea and can have vastly different results. That is because a lot of the success has to do with the level of commitment to the idea, how hard you are willing to work to make it happen, and how keen you are on evaluating the idea and tweaking it to along the way to get it just right.

I share more ideas in my ebook Turn Your Book into a Business, but this list gets you started on great, creative ways to market whatever it is you are selling.

So play around with these marketing ideas and see which ones really help you stand out.

No matter what marketing idea you choose, know that it won?t be a one-shot deal. Marketing a book, writing career, or business is tough work and requires commitment over a period of time. Even if your marketing idea is focused on a one-time event, it will still take commitment over the time leading up to the event to make sure it is successful.

Are you ready to market your way to success?

You can?t say you don?t have the ideas, because I?m giving you ten here.

So here you go.

Offline marketing ideas

1. Hold a signature event. We spent a lot of time talking about online promotion, but coming offline to do something really great is an excellent way to stand out and promote your book, writing career, or business. Hold a workshop, retreat, conference, or other event focused on your topic or your unique view of that topic. For instance, if you wrote a book called No More Tears, about healing the hurt of your past relationships, then hold a No More Tears retreat where you help attendees really focus on letting go of that hurt and seeing a brighter, tear-free day.

2. Start an organization. Is there a hole in your industry for a new association or organization? If you?ve written a book on a certain topic or you run a business related to solving a certain problem, then there is a good chance you have a certain amount of knowledge and expertise in that area. Maybe you need to bring people together to discuss the topic in more detail or to do more extensive work in this area. Your organization can be the place for this important work to happen.

3. Create a meetup. There are many online tools that can help you publicize your event and take it offline. LinkedIn, Facebook, and Meetup.com all offer ways to gather like-minded people around you.? This idea is listed under offline marketing ideas because while it uses online tools, the aim is to hold an offline meetup event.

4. Speak on your topic. I?ve written on this blog about using speaking to grow your business, but it bears mentioning again. Speaking allows you to have a captive audience to hear your message, and if you are speaking to the right group ? people who are interested in your topic ?, then you have? a good chance of coming out of that speaking engagement with book sales or a lead on some new business, as somebody is bound to ask for your card, invite you to speak elsewhere, want to do business with you, etc.

5. Hold a launch party or grand opening. If you are publishing a book, don?t miss the opportunity to have a launch party. This is a great way to create buzz around your book, gather your staunchest supporters, and get your book off to a strong start. The same works for a business. Even if you have been in business a while, you can still use this approach: Hold a party or event to mark a significant milestone.

Online marketing ideas

6. Run a blog. Run a blog related to your book, business, or whatever it is you want to promote or share with a wider audience. Your blog allows you to share helpful information, promote a cause, and bring people to your way of thinking. It?s not necessary that you blog every day, but you do want to blog often enough to ensure you regularly post new content.

7. Start an online group. You can use the same online tools I suggested for organizing an offline meetup to create an online group. Facebook, LinkedIn, Google +, and others allow you to create and maintain groups around a topic, organization, or common theme. So if you don?t feel like the work of organizing offline events, then an online group can be the thing to help you build authority in your area and work with like-minded people who are interested in what you are promoting or selling.

8. Team up with others. Reach out to others online in your niche, area, or industry. Get to know them and start promoting each others? blogs, websites, tweets, events, etc. Let this multiply your influence and impact.

9. Post to your social networks. Every marketing post I do most likely has a suggestion for using social media. That is because social media is just that important. If you are going to use the Internet to market your books, writing career, or business, you?ve got to include social media. Post to your social networks about important developments in your business, your latest book or project, as well as useful information, news, etc., about the industry. Invite your social media contacts to join your mailing list.

10. Join online groups related to your topic. Even if you don?t want to create an online group, you can be a part of one. Join a few groups that are related to your industry, book?s topic, etc. But don?t start spamming the group with sales messages or constantly posting about what you do. Instead, get to know the culture of the group. Post helpful, meaningful comments or feedback. If you regularly post helpful and useful information, you become known for being a useful and helpful resource.

Now you have ten great ways to market your book, writing career, or business. You can have a successful freelance business or a good book writing career, if you do good work and market it so others know how to find it.

Which idea will you implement?

Pilgrims mark Christmas in Bethlehem

At midnight mass in the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, the cradle of Christianity, the message was of peace, love and goodwill to all mankind. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

By The Associated Press

Pilgrims and locals celebrated Christmas Day on Tuesday in the ancient Bethlehem church where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminating the sacred site and the joyous sound of prayer filling its overflowing halls.

Overcast skies and a cold wind didn't dampen the spirits of worshippers who came dressed in holiday finery and the traditional attire of foreign lands to mark the holy day in this biblical West Bank town. Bells pealed and long lines formed inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex as Christian faithful waited eagerly to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Duncan Hardock, 24, a writer from MacLean, Va., traveled to Bethlehem from the republic of Georgia, where he had been teaching English. After passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers, he walked to Bethlehem's Manger Square where the church stands.

"I feel we got to see both sides of Bethlehem in a really short period of time," Hardock said. "On our walk from the wall, we got to see the lonesome, closed side of Bethlehem ... But the moment we got into town, we're suddenly in the middle of the party."

Bethlehem lies 6 miles south of Jerusalem. Entry to the city is controlled by Israel, which occupied the West Bank in 1967.

Hardock's girlfriend, 22-year-old Jennifer Gemmell of Longmont, Colorado, compared the festive spirit in Manger Square on Christmas Eve, saying "it's like being at Times Square at New Year's."

Boy's Christmas wish: Adoption of little brother caught in US-Russia spat

The cavernous church was unable to hold all the worshippers who had hoped to celebrate Christmas Day Mass inside. A loudspeaker outside the church broadcast the service to the hundreds in the square who could not pack inside.

In churches and bus stations, on water skis and bicycles, people from the Middle East to middle America celebrate Christmas.

Pope's prayer for peace
Tourists in the square posed for pictures as vendors hawked olive wood rosaries, nativity scenes, corn on the cob, roasted nuts, tea and coffee.

An official from the Palestinian tourism ministry predicted 10,000 foreigners would visit Bethlehem on Christmas Day and said 15,000 visited on Christmas Eve ? up 20 percent from a year earlier. The official, Rula Maia'a, attributed the rise in part to the Church of the Nativity's classification earlier this year as a U.N. World Heritage Site.

Christians from Israel ? Arab citizens and others ? also boosted the number of visitors.

Germany's latest big export: Christmas markets

On Christmas Eve, thousands of Christians from all over the world packed the square, which was awash in light, resplendent with decorations and adorned by a lavishly decorated, 55-foot fir tree. Their Palestinian hosts, who welcome this holiday as the high point of their city's year, were especially joyous this season, proud of the United Nations' recognition of an independent state of Palestine just last month.

On Monday evening, Pope Benedict XVI prayed that Israelis and Palestinians live in peace and freedom, and asked the faithful to pray for strife-torn Syria as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

He urged people to reflect upon what they find time for in their busy, technology-driven lives.

A family's Christmas wish: Healthy heart for girl

"The great moral question of our attitude toward the homeless, toward refugees and migrants takes on a deeper dimension: Do we really have room for God when he seeks to enter under our roof? Do we have time and space for him?" the pope said.

"The faster we can move, the more efficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent," Benedict lamented.

Later Tuesday, the world's Christmas focus will shift to Vatican City, where the pope will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech ? Latin for "to the city and the world" ? from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to thousands of pilgrims, tourists and Romans gathered in the piazza below.

Egypt ex-jihadi group: opposition used violence

CAIRO (AP) ? The leader of a former jihadist group who is now a member of Egyptian parliament accused the largely secular opposition on Monday of using violence in the country's political struggle.

Another member of the same group, who served 29 years in prison for his role as a conspirator in the 1981 assassination of President Sadat, charged that opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi are trying to drag the country into a civil war.

The two ? Safwat Abdel-Ghani and Tarek el-Zumor ? are members of the Islamic Group, or Gamaa Islamiya, which was among militant groups behind one of the longest waves of violence against the Egyptian regime in the 1980s and 1990s. The group renounced violence while most of its leaders were imprisoned under Hosni Mubarak's regime.

Since Mubarak's ouster in February 2011 following a popular uprising, the group has formed an Islamist political party and its leaders have become important players in the new political scene, dominated by Islamists.

The accusations come amid a highly charged atmosphere in Egypt after a polarizing, monthlong fight over the Islamist-drafted constitution. The charter passed with 64 percent in a referendum, according to unofficial results.

Official results had been expected on Monday but did not come out. An official at the electoral commission said it is currently reviewing more than 400 complaints of fraud and violations by the opposition before announcing the results on Tuesday. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Abdel-Ghani was speaking at a news conference to launch his group's initiative for a national dialogue aimed at bridging the deep rifts.

"There is no doubt that the opposition has failed miserably in achieving its goals. This failure has reasons," Abdel-Ghani told a news conference. "The first of these reasons is that it resorted to violence and used thugs to express its opinions."

Abdel-Ghani was detained in 1981 as a suspect in Sadat's assassination but was released a few years later and not charged. He served other prison sentences in a later assassination of the parliament speaker in the 1990s. President Mohammed Morsi appointed him over the weekend to the upper house of parliament, just days before the chamber assumes temporary legislative powers.

Islamist groups have risen to domination over Egypt's government in the wake of the uprising, and some of them have threatened to push their own vigilantes to protect them against violent clashes. Islamist groups also accuse former regime officials of using the charged political atmosphere to create chaos and undermine Morsi.

The opposition, made up of liberal and leftist groups, has accused Islamists of trying to clamp down on dissenting voices and spreading fear.

"We call on all political forces in Egypt ... to immediately give up all elements that almost led Egypt to civil war and for all those who participated in this to apologize," said el-Zumor of Gamaa Islamiya.

The recent flare-up of political tensions has turned deadly at times. On Dec. 5, clashes erupted between supporters and opponents of Morsi at the presidential palace, when Morsi supporters attacked the opposition. At least 10 people died, and the Brotherhood claims most of those who died were their supporters.

The offices of the Brotherhood and the liberal al-Wafd party were attacked.

Hossam Mounes, a member of the opposition National Salvation Front, said the accusations of using violence are "clumsy" and not based on evidence.

"The history of Islamist groups was based on bearing arms, and now they speak of democracy," he said. "Some of the Islamist groups are really feeling the tension against them and they can't understand that democracy is a practice and is not only a means to get to power."

Abdel-Ghani also said the opposition has failed because it campaigned against Islamic law, or Shariah, and relied on mobilization of Christians by the church to take part in protests.

With the referendum results expected on Tuesday, Morsi ordered parliament's upper chamber, the Shura Council, to convene on Wednesday.

The new constitution would give the council powers to legislate until the lower house is elected within the next two months. Morsi has held legislative powers for months now since a court disbanded the lower house of parliament.

Over the weekend, Morsi appointed 90 members to the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, in an attempt to make the body more representative. The 90 include at least 30 Islamists and a dozen minority Christians. The council now has a total of 270 members, two-thirds of them elected. Critics, however, say most of the representatives are either Islamists or their supporters.

The council was elected last winter in a vote with an extremely low turnout of less than 10 percent of Egypt's 51 million eligible voters.

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (60) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

A lively portrait that's as colorful, dynamic and oh-so-fashionable as one of Vreeland's magazine spreads.

An otherwise fine profile of American fashion magazine doyen Diana Vreeland is let down by pedestrian production.

She wanted you to look and look again, and this film is full of images which make you do just that.

There's something marvellously comic about her, an effect reinforced by her refined yet raucous baritone voice.

This pleasurable documentary is jammed packed with images from magazines, photoshoots and newsreels of a life well lived, but also lots of historical footage of the life Vreeland imagined she had too.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

Obama nominating Kerry for secretary of state

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Friday will nominate Sen. John Kerry as his next secretary of state, a senior administration official said, making the first move in a sweeping overhaul of his national security team heading into a second term.

If confirmed, Kerry would take the helm at the State Department from outgoing Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has long stated her intentions to leave early next year. Kerry, a longtime Massachusetts senator, is expected to be easily approved for the Cabinet post by his longtime Capitol Hill colleagues.

Obama will announce Kerry's nomination from the White House, said the official, who requested anonymity in order to discuss the president's decision before the announcement.

It was unclear whether Clinton would attend the announcement. The secretary fell and suffered a concussion last week, State Department officials said, and hasn't made public appearances since then.

Kerry's nomination could bring to a close what has become for the White House a contentious and distracting effort to name a new secretary of state.

Kerry was the Democratic nominee for president in 2004, losing a close election to incumbent George W. Bush. He's a decorated Vietnam veteran who was critical of the war effort when he returned to the U.S., even testifying in front of the Senate committee he eventually chaired.

Kerry's only other rival for the job, U.N. ambassador Susan Rice, faced harsh criticism from congressional Republicans for her initial accounting of the deadly September attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya. Obama vigorously defended Rice, a close friend and longtime adviser, but GOP senators dug in, threatening to hold up her nomination if the president tapped her for the post.

Rice withdrew her name from consideration last week, making Kerry all but certain to become the nominee. People familiar with the White House's decision-making said support within the administration was moving toward Kerry even before Rice pulled out.

Kerry, 69, is the first Cabinet nomination Obama has made since winning a second term, and the first piece in an extensive shuffle of his national security team. The president is also expected soon to nominate a new defense secretary to take over for retiring Leon Panetta and a new director of the Central Intelligence Agency to replace former spy chief David Petreaus, who resigned last month after admitting to an affair with his biographer.

Kerry, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has long sought the nation's top diplomatic post. Obama considered him for the job after the 2008 election before picking Clinton in a surprise move.

Since then, Obama has dispatched Kerry around the world on his behalf numerous times, particularly to tamp down diplomatic disputes in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was also part of Obama's debate preparations team during the 2012 election, playing the role of Republican challenger Mitt Romney in mock debates.

Kerry also won praise from Obama aides for his sharp national security-focused speech at the Democratic National Convention in August. He memorably told delegates: "Ask Osama bin Laden if he's better off now than he was four years ago."

Before nominating Kerry, the White House consulted with congressional Democrats about the fate of the Senate seat he has held for five terms. An open seat in Massachusetts could give recently defeated Republican Sen. Scott Brown a chance to win back a job in Washington.

Democrats have sought to assure the White House that the party has strong potential candidates in the state that could keep Kerry's seat from falling into Republican hands.

Kerry has pushed the White House's national security agenda in the Senate with mixed results. He ensured ratification of a nuclear arms reduction treaty in 2010 and most recently failed to persuade Republicans to back a U.N. pact on the rights of the disabled.

A Bill for Video Games Arrives before a Bill for Guns | Slog

This is how the US does it...

This morning, Sen. Jay Rockefeller introduced legislation in the Senate ?to arrange for the National Academy of Sciences to study the impact of violent video games and violent programming on children.? It?s depressing to see lawmakers rushing after diversions in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, when the conversations we ought to be having should be about gun control and mental health treatment, among other structural factors. And it?s even worse when you consider that Rockefeller?s wholly redundant bill has hit the floor of Congress before any gun legislation was introduced.
The video game industry will generate $70 billion in 2012, which is more than double what the gun industry will generate in the same period. Yet you will not find a politician who fears the video game industry like he/she fears the gun industry. Obviously the gun situation is not about money or the industry (the base) but entirely in the sphere of ideology (the superstructure).

New York City should hike taxes on big business-comptroller

(Reuters) - New York City's top financial officer and possible contender for mayor in 2013, John Liu, proposed on Thursday tax hikes for big businesses and an end to Madison Square Garden's $15 million annual property tax exemption.

The proposals by New York City Comptroller John Liu include tax hikes on private equity firms, which would help offset his plan for $500 million in tax breaks and lowered fines for 90 percent of the city's small businesses.

Liu is expected to vie for the Democratic mayoral nomination for the election in November 2013.

The city could end tax breaks for big companies - more than $250 million of which were handed out last year, Liu said.

The city could also eliminate its $15 million annual property tax exemption for Madison Square Garden, the indoor arena in midtown Manhattan that's home to the New York Knicks basketball team. Madison Square Garden has been exempt from paying taxes on real property since 1982 under New York state law.

The arena is owned by The Madison Square Garden Co, which also owns the Knicks and other professional sports teams. The company also owns Radio City Music Hall, the Beacon Theatre and others venues, as well as television networks.

Liu also proposed examining tax breaks for special interests. Insurance companies, for instance, have not paid the general corporation tax since 1974, at a cost of $300 million annually to the city, he said.

Private equity firms could also start paying the unincorporated business tax for carried interest or gains from assets being held for investment. The exemption costs New York City about $200 million a year, Liu said.

Liu's package would use the revenue generated by those measures to offset his plan to ease the tax burden for small businesses.

He proposed ending the city's general corporation tax for all businesses with liabilities under $5,000 -- about 240,000 business in the city, or 85 percent of those that currently pay the tax.

His plan would also reduce some fines, as well as exempt businesses that make less than $250,000 in annual income from the city's unincorporated business tax.

The proposals would have to be approved by the governor and state legislature after a request by the city council.

The city is facing a possible $2.7 billion gap in fiscal 2014 that could grow to $3.8 billion the following year, Liu said.

Obama to press for policy changes after shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is launching an administration-wide effort to curb gun violence, underscoring the growing political consensus over tightening gun restrictions following the horrific massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obama is tasking Vice President Joe Biden, a longtime gun control advocate, with spearheading the effort. In remarks from the White House on Wednesday, Obama will outline a process for pursuing policy changes following the school shooting, though he is not expected to call for specific measures.

The president has vowed to use "whatever power this office holds" to safeguard the nation's children after Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six adults were killed at the school by a gunman carrying an arsenal of ammunition and a high-powered, military-style rifle.

The White House sees some urgency in formulating a policy response to the shooting, even as Obama and his top aides are consumed with averting the "fiscal cliff" before tax hikes and spending cuts take effect in January. The incident has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some fear that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

Many pro-gun lawmakers also have called for a greater focus on mental health issues and the impact of violent entertainment. White House aides say stricter gun laws alone are not the answer.

"It's a complex problem that requires more than one solution," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday. "It calls for not only re-examining our gun laws and how well we enforce them, but also for engaging mental health professionals, law enforcement officials, educators, parents and communities to find those solutions."

Still, much of the immediate focus after the shooting is on gun control, an issue that has been dormant in Washington for years. Obama expended little political capital on gun issues during his first term, despite several mass shootings, including a movie theater attack in Aurora, Colo., in the midst of this year's presidential campaign.

The White House has begun to signal that Obama may be more proactive on gun issues following the murders of the elementary school youngsters, ages 6 and 7.

Carney said Obama was "actively supportive" of legislation to reinstate a ban on assault-style weapons that expired in 2004. The president long has supported a ban, but exerted little effort to get it passed during his first term. Obama also would support closing a gun show loophole allowing people to buy arms from private dealers without background checks and would be interested in legislation limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines, Carney said.

The policy process Obama was announcing Wednesday was expected to include input from the departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services. The heads of those agencies met with Obama at the White House on Monday.

Chemical that fends off harm to organs: Purines fend off surgery-related damage

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Anesthesia is quite safe these days. But sometimes putting a patient under to fix one problem, such as heart damage, can harm a different organ, such as a kidney.

Now a group of researchers led by Holger Eltzschig, MD, PhD, a professor of anesthesiology at the University Colorado School of Medicine, has found a group of molecules that fend off damage during anesthesia.

"This is a promising discovery," says Eltzschig, who practices at University of Colorado Hospital. "It suggests a new way to promote healing."

In an article published Dec. 12 in the New England Journal of Medicine, Eltzschig and colleagues at Harvard Medical School and Northeastern University report hopeful findings about a group of molecules called purines. Purines are basic molecular building blocks in the body -- they help produce DNA and RNA and they assist with short-term storage of energy. One variety of purine is called adenosine.

The researchers determined that generating adenosine outside of cells can help protect organs from damage. And they saw that activating adenosine receptors on the lungs, the intestine, or the heart can help protect these organs.

Eltzschig and his fellow researchers looked at adenosine and related chemical processes in cancer, lung injury, bowel inflammation and platelet function, among others.

For patients who might face surgery with anesthesia, the findings are good news.

"Increasing developments in this arena will open up several new avenues for the treatment," the article says.

Windows Phone 7.8 demoed on the Nokia Lumia 610, may be available via NokiaCare

Aakash uploaded this video showing the features of Windows Phone 7.8 on the Nokia Lumia 610, making an effort to cover all features, including small ones such as new wallpaper and ring tones.

MobiGyaan reports that Nokia Care centres may be offering to flash the upgrade to existing phones, and we have also heard from readers in other countries that this would be possible, which makes sense with the firmware already on Navifirm.

At present it seems Nokia does not include their software enhancements such as Bluetooth file transfer to all handsets but I am sure these will become available soon after.

Depardieu wants to surrender French passport

PARIS (AP) ? Gerard Depardieu, one of France's best-known actors, has chastised his country's Socialist prime minister for insulting remarks over his decision to move to tax-friendly Belgium and said in an open letter published Sunday that he's turning in his passport.

The letter, which the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche said was penned by Depardieu, quickly propelled him into the spotlight, not for his acclaimed acting skills but for raising the sensitive issue of tax exiles as France looks to fill state coffers with a stiff tax on the rich.

"We no longer have the same country. I'm a true European, a citizen of the world," Depardieu wrote in the letter. He said his 2012 tax bill ? 85 percent of his revenue ? is fully paid.

Depardieu, who turns 64 this month, said he has worked since the age of 14, first as a printer, and that in last 45 years he has paid ?145 million ($190 million) in taxes.

"I hand over my passport to you and my social security card, which I have never used," the letter said, referring to Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.

Last week, Ayrault called Depardieu "pathetic" and "unpatriotic" for the actor's decision to move to Nechin, a Belgian village barely a mile (1.6 kilometers) across the border from Lille in northern France. Nechin has drawn other high-earning French residents.

The letter drew quick reaction but little sympathy.

Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti said she was "scandalized" by Depardieu's decision to turn in his passport. "French citizenship, it's an honor," she said on BFM-TV. "It is rights and duties, too, among them to be able to pay taxes."

President Francois Hollande plans to levy a 75 percent tax on revenue over ?1 million to reduce France's budget deficit and debt, and Filippetti said, "Gerard Depardieu is deserting the battle in the war against the crisis."

David Assouline, a spokesman for the governing Socialist Party, said of the actor: "He's playing his worst role."

But Depardieu said in the letter that he is leaving his country because the government "considers that success, creation, talent ... should be sanctioned."

Others have crossed the border before Depardieu, notably the man billed as France's richest, Bernard Arnault, chief of the luxury goods and fashion giant LVMH and worth an estimated $41 billion. He is seeking Belgian citizenship.

It's unclear whether Depardieu realizes his proclamation may in the end just be a symbolic gesture because it's hard to stop being a French citizen. The Civil Code says one must have another nationality in order to give up French citizenship because it is forbidden to be stateless.

Depardieu's burly presence is well-known in France.

He has made more than 150 films and is internationally acclaimed, including an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac in the 1990 film by the same name.

In an upcoming movie to be directed by Abel Ferrara, Depardieu will portray former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who fell from power on claims by a New York hotel maid of sexual assault. Charges were dropped and a civil settlement was reached.

A French case that Strauss-Kahn seeks to dismiss is pending.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings Review - Video Games | Games ... - Digit

The LEGO video games have always been about fun more than serious gameplay, taking on beloved fan favourites like the Star Wars saga or Indiana Jones and introducing it to a whole new, and slightly younger, audience.

With The Lord of the Rings game, the LEGO franchise breaks new ground. It does a fine balancing act to keep both young and older fans of the epic fantasy engrossed without trivializing the gameplay elements overmuch, and retain all characteristics of a classic LEGO adventure.

At first, cramming the entire Tolkien trilogy in one game seems complex, downright ridiculous, but the game developers solve the riddle efficiently. Peter Jackson?s motion pictures on Tolkien?s books form the basis of this LEGO game adaptation, where all the major parts of Frodo and Sam?s journey from Hobbiton to Mount Doom are relived in a world made up of plastic blocks. While photorealistic CGI may be the order of AAA games these days, but for the LEGO Lord of the Rings (which isn?t really a AAA title so to speak) cartoony, amusing characters are the order of the day. And this works surprisingly in favour of the game and its underlying narrative.

The game starts with the motion picture prologue, sporting Cate Blanchett?s narrative voice-over, with the epic battle of Dagorlad depicted by dotted lines of Elves, Men and Orcs of the second age -- you see glimpses of cute animated LEGO models of Elrond, Isildur, Elendil and Sauron, in some of the close-ups. This and other cut-scenes (like Frodo and Sam bumping into Merry and Pippin in Farmer Maggot?s fields, the Council of Elrond, etc.) are recreated exactly as they were shown in Peter Jackson?s movies, albeit with slight comic relief, which works beautifully for the game.

Gameplay is fairly simple on LEGO The Lord of the Rings. You start off from Hobbiton with Frodo and Sam in cue and eventually meet and unlock more characters as you advance in the narrative. You are choose to play as any character, with the game letting you cycle through characters in real-time, and levels include puzzle-solving elements and other objectives. Combat is light and comical at times, and even if you die you revive almost instantly, losing only a fraction of the LEGO studs you collect in the game.

Studs can be collected by smashing anything that looks to have been made out of LEGO tiles and they?re found aplenty in the game. A line of studs, in any level, directs you to the nearest checkpoint and keeps you on track of the main campaign. However, the game?s levels are open to exploration and feel free to do so to extend the gameplay -- you can find a hidden blade or a treasure chest inside a cave or behind an unsuspecting door. People you encounter in the game also have quests to offer, this helps break the monotony of the main storyline and keep things fresh.

While playing the alone isn?t necessarily bad, but the LEGO Lord of the Rings truly shines when you have someone playing with you. The fun factor just goes through the roof! Two players don?t need to stay close to one another, they can go their separate ways on any level, which leads to a diagonal split-screen to accommodate both players. The game has plenty to offer in terms of exploration, achievements and enemies to keep both parties interested.

Iconic boss battles are nice and cute in the game, and so are the general sights and sounds. The plastic models of all the characters are distinct enough to recognize on the screen (even they all look the same at times), and their individual power and skills help you conquer any given level in fun and unique ways.

There are no real negatives to this game apart from the fact that it can get a little boring for mature audiences, but only the ones who haven?t dived into Tolkien?s universe or appreciated Peter Jackson?s adaptations. TT Games and LEGO have done a good job re-adapting a highly acclaimed adaptation of Tolkien?s epic. Not only is the game and story familiar, they?ve freshened things up by creating exploration-friendly levels and polishing tried-and-tested gameplay mechanics to ensure the game shines -- more so in a co-op environment. Whether or not you?re a Tolkien fan, you need to try this game or introduce it to a junior.

Dexter, Season 7

Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah McKay (Season 7, episode 12).

Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah McKay (Season 7, episode 12). Photo by Randy Tepper/Showtime.

Every week in?Slate?s?Dexter?TV club, Katy Waldman will have an IM conversation with a different?Dexter?fan. This week, she rehashes the season finale with Jeffrey Bloomer, SlateV?s blogger/editor.

Katy Waldman: Season 7 is officially wrapped up and in the bag (unlike Dexter double entendres, which are obviously deathless). Jeff, based on where things left off tonight, will you be tuning into season 8?

Jeffrey Bloomer: I will, but I am stupidly loyal when it comes to TV shows. I watched The X-Files all the way through, along with some embarrassing others I should never have been watching in the first place (pouring one out for you, Desperate Housewives). But this episode did feel very final, and very climactic. Dexter's lifestyle has been taken to the logical extreme.

Waldman: By targeting LaGuerta, a true innocent, Dex slid to the bottom of a slippery slope that has beckoned him since day one. What's surprising is that he took Deb with him. I did not see her murder of LaGuerta coming, and am not sure how I feel about it.

Bloomer: When Deb turned up at the dock, I had a pretty good idea of how things would go down. It used to be that people debated whether Dexter as a show is morally corrupt, whether it induces a sense of collusion with a killer. Somewhere along the line, those objections quieted down, but after this episode, I have to say: There may be something there. I wanted Deb to shoot LaGuerta, and not only because her character has always irked me. I wanted Dexter and Deb to make it another day in Miami.

Waldman: You will have to explain to me at some point why LaGuerta is so despicable. Am I the only one who doesn?t hate her? Like you, I can?t help rooting for Dex and Deb?but these new terms of survival worry me. The contrast between Deb?s basic morality and Dexter's darkness has sustained the show for so long. Will their dynamic be as interesting now that they?re both murderers?

Bloomer: I don?t know, and this episode didn't give us any obvious pointers. The cutaway to the fireworks at the end seems like a visual joke at the end of a very eventful hour, but what?s next? The show has fundamentally changed this season.

Waldman: It has! I think it?s only going to get chillier. So many quasi-sympathetic characters went ?full psychopath? in episode 12. Remember all our handwringing over whether Hannah could have actually spiked Deb?s water? Tonight that mystery was solved within minutes: She did. And then she bit Dexter! Meanwhile, he strayed far, far from the code and Debra, as we discussed, shot her police captain. Are we seeing a sea change??

Bloomer: Definitely. For a show about a guy who ties people to a table, stabs them to death, then tosses their body parts into the ocean, Dexter has always been very funny?lighthearted even. The episode felt grim and workmanlike. The flashbacks to what seemed like simpler early days with Doakes made the contrast even sharper. Like Harry said, we knew this day would come, but it's still a little jarring how bleak this world has become.

Waldman: I wanted to ask you about those flashbacks! What were they doing there, besides adding to the "should old acquaintance be forgot" New Year's theme? They seemed a bit random to me.

Bloomer: I thought they were weird too. I think part of it was to signal what a pivotal episode this was, and to mark the beginning of something different. But they didn't reveal anything we didn't already know: The natural sleuth in Doakes saw through Dexter's donuts and fake smile.

Waldman: Well, this episode belatedly vindicated the Doakes worldview?that Dexter is, simply, a ?creepy motherfucker.? Maybe we?re supposed to pay homage to Doakes now for seeing what we didn?t want to see. (Full disclosure: I have this odd fantasy of Doakes supplanting Harry to become Dexter?s tough-love spirit guide.)?

Bloomer: But those were original scenes, right? Not re-cut ones from old episodes?

Waldman: Right. I don't remember Doakes confronting Dexter about his ?glide? in season two.

Bloomer: There was something else surprising about this episode: Hannah McKay and Joey are alive! Who knew?

Waldman: It does defy all prior TV Club predictions! Hannah took a back seat in the finale, after delivering an evil but also justifiable J?accuse to Deb (?At least I?m not a hypocrite.?) But she placed a plant on Dexter?s doorstep after escaping from the hospital. Do you think she?s out for revenge?or more lovin?? ?

Bloomer: Yes, I enjoyed that speech. Talk about perfect casting. It looks like Hannah did what Dexter was too stupid or too selfish to do?run away?but after all that, I have to believe we'll be seeing her again. But in the near term, I think Dexter's complete focus has to be on Deb.

Waldman: I was struck by Hannah?s words to Dex: "You were supposed to choose me." How ironic that Dexter chose Debra, finally, only for Debra to ?become? Hannah.

Bloomer: That's true. Deb took her devotion to Dexter to the absolute extreme. We saw her return to the party after shooting LaGuerta in a hardened daze, so I wonder if her feelings of doubt and regret are over now. She isn't protecting a killer anymore?she is the killer.

I do wonder why it never occurred to LaGuerta that this was a possibility!

Waldman: Good point. I also couldn't believe that LaGuerta went to the shipping yard a second time without any back-up! Secret death wish?

Bloomer: Yes! My issue with LaGuerta was that she always seemed to make things more difficult than they needed to be?everything was always so fraught. But tonight, she was admirably tough and ruthless, and in the end it was that that did her in. I renew my objection that her entire crusade against Dexter felt like a catalyst to move the show along, but at the end of this episode, I can honestly say I am looking forward to the final season. This winding, wild season made me want watch more than I have in a while, and I am genuinely curious to see where it finishes.

Waldman: Amen to that! Do you think a happy ending is still possible?

Bloomer: I shudder to imagine what a "happy ending" looks like for Dexter at this point. He and Deb did what they had to do, as Hannah put it earlier this season and Dexter echoed tonight, but they cannot walk away unscathed. And as we know from watching this show for all these years, more characters will die next season. My lone plea: This fall was about consequences. I do hope next year will be allowed a little more room to return to the procedural roots that got us hooked in the first place.

Waldman: Watch out for those procedural roots! As Doakes observed, taking too much delight in them may indicate some kind of mental disorder. ?

Bloomer: Guilty as charged?

Waldman: Me too. See you next season!
