Fishermen show up in big numbers to fish for free throughout California

Saturday was the first of two statewide free fishing days this year.

On the Central Coast, locals showed up in larger than normal numbers at places like Lopez Lake and Santa Margarita Lake.

The idea is to introduce more people to fishing by offering them some incentive. For the day, fishers don't have to buy a sport fishing license.

"Fishing licenses, with everything, can add up, and when we found out it was free fishing today, we were really jazzed about that. We made sure to get out here early and make full use of it," said Guyton Colantuono, a fisherman who brought his children out to learn about fishing at Lopez Lake.

In some areas, people can even attend clinics and learn about the best way to catch and prepare fish.

The next free fishing day is September 7th.
