breast-cancer

(KPLR)? October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and some big developments in the fight against the sometimes fatal disease. A new simple test shows your risk of cancer before it develops.

Women already know they should do self-exams and have regular mammograms to screen for breast cancer but there is another method to detect their risk before the cancer develops.? It is a test that takes just seconds.

It?s Breva- Gin. It involves a quick swab of the inside of both cheeks. After that a patient?s DNA is ready for analysis, the tests look as 7 different snips of DNA that are associated with breast cancer. The test takes about a minute to perform. If a patient comes back positive, it does not mean she has breast cancer, nor does it mean she will definitely develop the disease. However, it is an indication that preventative care could help.

The results of Breva-Gin take about a month to come back. It is covered under some insurance plans. Doctors say some of their patients who received a positive test result, quit smoking or drinking, and improved their diet.

When it comes to who should be tested, the experts say all women should be tested for breast cancer as some point but testing is particularly critical for woman with a family history of the disease.
